2024 Open Report:

The 2024 Lawle Guby Open was held on Saturday 9th November at Ramsdale golf course, making it one of the latest dates that The Open has been held. Fortunately the weather was mild, but a lack of tee-times meant that tee-off was an unusually late 2.20pm. This, combined with the late time of the year, meant that the competitors would be racing against the setting sun during the latter stages. After the usual mild consternation before tee-off about the handicaps and the subsequent award of an additional stroke to Glenn's, all three hit solid, but unspectacular, tee shots and all opened with solid fours. However, the next five holes saw Robert score three pars and gain five shots on Lance and two on Glenn. This caused yet more complaints about handicaps, with Glenn and Lance ignoring the fact that, unlike some, Robert had taken the trouble to actually practise some shots at the driving range before the competition started.

A prolonged sneezing fit at the 8th tee triggered a par three for Lance at that hole and the start of an amazing comeback, which would take him to the brink of the title as Robert's challenge stuttered over the next few holes, which included a six and four fives. The 9th hole included a lengthy wait as the group in front slowly hunted for a ball and finished their round with the light visibly fading. Glenn continued to accumulate steadily and was also firmly in contention, although a five on the opening hole of a back nine that included two more fives and a penalty eight for refusing to complete the 16th hole in rapidly fading light saw his challenge end. He secured a commendable 4 on the 10th hole, after losing his ball in the pond that was surprisingly filled with water again after six or seven years of being empty. The short 14th saw Lance win the Closest to the Pin trophy again by beating Robert by 4-5ft, who had the last laugh by sinking his putt for a birdie and drawing level again with Lance in the race for The Open. Lance won the next hole to lead by one as the light started to fail and Glenn looked increasingly disillusioned by the playing conditions. However, Robert dramatically beat Lance by two shots on the 16th and opened up a one shot lead as Lance struggled in the rough and night finally fell. Serious discussions took place about ceasing play, but all agreed to move on to the next hole. Robert extracted a special luminous orange ball from his bag and hit a great shot on one of the longest holes on the course. However, his ball proved impossible to find and a penalty drop saw Lance draw level again. It was agreed that further play was impossible and Lance and Rob moved onto the putting green for a playoff. A putt-in-one on the 4th of 6 holes was ultimately enough for Robert to emerge victorious by one shot, clutching the famous old trophy, with its missing club and arm, in triumph. Lance took the Gross Score trophy and Glenn walked away with the coveted Wooden Spoon.
